The multicultural fiction Singapore's Runaway was set in Singapore, Penang, Malacca and Indonesia as Stanley and his friends sailed the ship The Everingham. His family's ship, The Lotus, had a looming presence throughout the story, signifying the bounty on Stanley, forcing him to keep his past a secret.
Stanley was born in the multicultural island city and country of Singapore. He ran away from his family there. Back when this story was set, Singapore was under the rule of the British Empire. Stanley's great grandfather was a merchant from China who had gone to Singapore for business and eventually settled there. Hence, Stanley is a Straits Born Chinese.
The Everingham docked in George Town, Penang, which is another Straits Settlement that is famous for its delectable food and beautiful architecture. Stanley disembarks to enjoy the sights and the food there, finally feasting on Satay and Laksa which he longed for since leaving Singapore. He spots George, his Stepmother's brother, sent to search and retrieve him home.
The Straits of Malacca is the busiest Strait in the world. This is where The Everingham docks after the pirate attack. It's famous for its food and shopping, in particular, the Jonker Street Night Market. It's also where Stanley evades a swarm of bounty hunters.
Legend has it that before Captain Hawkins' time, the previous crew of The Everingham discovered a hidden pirate treasure. The last surviving member of that crew left behind a map and clues for Captain Hawkins before his death. Intrigued by the mystery, Captain Hawkins had the map framed and turned it into a team-building activity for his crew. However, the map soon vanished, and eerie events began to unfold on the ship.
Stanley, a runaway seeking freedom and adventure, recognizes The Lotus as one of his family's ships searching for him. The ship serves as a constant reminder that he must hide if he wants to maintain his newfound independence.
Piracy has always been rampant in the Strait of Malacca, though in modern times, coordinated patrols by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore has significantly reduced pirate attacks. In this tale, Captain Hawkins, a former military man, has trained his crew to deal with pirates.
